DARK AVENGER – Dark Avenger (Debut CD+1bonus), Traditional Heavy Metal like Manowar, Ultima Chance, Lacrado

The band was formed in early 1993, when Mário Linhares joined Leonel Valdez and Wagner Marcelo, to form Atena, a band from Brasilia that made a rock ‘n roll in the style of “Rock Brasil” (Legião Urbana, Plebe Rude , etc.), singing all the songs in Portuguese.

Dissatisfied with Atena’s style, Mário Linhares decides to dedicate himself to the musical style he really liked, which was the 80’s Heavy Metal made by bands like Manowar, Helloween, Iron Maiden, Metal Church, etc. and, with the support of Leonel Valdez, the changes begin within the band, starting with the name, which changes from Athena to Rat White, a name given by the ex-guitarist Marcelo, not having that name lasted for a long time, since the Members did not agree with that title. At the suggestion of ex-bassist Wagner Marcelo, Rat White is now called Dark Avenger, as the new compositions were already starting to take a turn towards power metal and traditional metal. The band then decided to compose all of their songs in English and fight for shows (it is worth mentioning that the group never made presentations with any name other than Dark Avenger).

In February 1994 they recorded their first and only demo-tape called “Choose Your Side … Heaven or Hell”, containing four songs “Die Mermaid!”, “Half Dead Eyes”, “Madelayne” and “Ghost Divinity” and begins to spread the word throughout Brazil, fighting for shows and spaces where they could show their work. They then send such a demo-tape to the magazine “Rock Brigade” where they get an excellent repercussion and, with that, they start receiving thousands of letters from all over Brazil, besides counting on the support of the countless fans who, on their own initiative send copies of the demo-tape for all of Brazil and all over the world, making the name Dark Avenger known everywhere.

Passam a fazer shows em vários estados do Brasil e participam de eventos e festivais, tendo sido vencedores em vários deles, como: 1º e 2º lugares no IV FECA, em Americana – SP (1995), 1º lugar no Metal World Festival , em Aeroanta – SP (1994), Melhor Vocalista na Banda Revelation Festival, em Brasília – DF (1994), Banda do Ano, em Brasília – DF (1997), Revelation Band by Rock Brigade (1996), Melhor Vocalista (5º na lista Rock Brigade 1997), etc.

Em 1995, com Mário Linhares (vocal), Leonel Valdez e Osiris di Castro (guitarras), Gustavo Vieira (baixo), Luciano Toledo (bateria) e Rafael Galvão (teclados), decidiram gravar seu primeiro disco, com patrocínio do Zen Estúdio de Brasília, contendo 11 músicas que foram muito bem recebidas pela mídia especializada e pelos fãs de Heavy Metal, tendo recebido nota 9 na Rock Brigade e sendo considerado “um dos melhores discos de heavy metal já lançados no último cinco anos “, além de ser artigo de várias revistas e fanzines do Brasil e de diversos países como Argentina (Metallica), Grécia (Singing Swords), Japão (Burrn! e Silent Noise), Estados Unidos, Alemanha etc.

Após dois anos em turnê pelo Brasil para promover seu primeiro álbum, Dark Avenger decide parar para compor sua obra-prima; o álbum “Tales of Avalon”, um álbum temático, dividido em: “Tales of Avalon – The Terror” e “Tales of Avalon – The Lament”, que contam as histórias épicas do reino mágico de Avalon e Camelot, as paixões e intrigas, magia e fanatismo, traições e guerras que levaram o reino de Avalon ao esquecimento e ao triunfo da religião cristã nas Ilhas Britânicas no início da era cristã. São vinte e duas canções divididas em dois álbuns, que com uma densidade singular, sempre desenham, na 1ª pessoa, todas as imagens e ações vividas naquele período, fazendo com que o locutor viva e sinta, diante de seus olhos e a cada música, a atmosfera da época.

O Dark Avenger, na época desta resenha, era formado por Mário Linhares (vocal), Leonel e Júlio (guitarras), FábioPoles (baixo), Rafael Galvão (teclados) e Kayo John (bateria), busca mostrar que o Heavy Metal, com toda a sua magia primordial., continua forte e vivo como nunca, e com identidade própria, mostra uma faceta inusitada e ousada para uma banda de metal brasileira.
